Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person through sexual contact. STDs can be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES?

Some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are:

  • Genital Herpes
  • HPV (genital warts)
  • Chlamydia
  • Ureaplasma
  • Mycoplasma
  • Hepatitis Β,C
  • Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae)

What tests can I do to find out if I have a Sexually Transmitted Disease?

Early diagnosis can often prove lifesaving for you and those around you.

In consultation with your attending physician, you can do all the laboratory tests required to have a complete laboratory check.

The typical lab test required for the above STDs are:

Genital Herpes

It is caused by the HSV-2 virus. The diagnosis is made with a simple blood test and culture.

It does not get completely cured.

HPV (genital warts) Virus

It is responsible for cervical cancer.

The examination includes a Pap test, and molecular testing in the laboratory – blood draw.

Chlamydia

The bacterium responsible is Chlamydia trachomatis. For women, a cervical sample or menstrual tissue is needed. For men semen, urine or urethral discharge. Chlamydia is detected 30 hours post infection.

Ureaplasma

The bacterium responsible is Ureaplasma urealyticum.

Diagnosis for women is through vaginal fluid culture and urine test. In men it is detected in culture of semen, urethral fluid or urine.

Mycoplasma

The bacterium responsible Bacteria Mycoplasma genitaliumis Mycoplasma genitalium

For women, an examination through vaginal fluid culture, urine examination is required. In men, the diagnosis can be made by culture of semen, urethral fluid or urine.

Hepatitis B, C

The viruses responsible are HBV (Hepatitis B virus) and HCV (Hepatitis C virus)

Their diagnosis is made in the blood cells through blood draw.

Gonorrhea

The microbe responsible is that of the gonococcus Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

For women, a cervical sample is needed. For men semen, urine or urethral discharge. Gonorrhea is detected 48 hours later.

Syphilis

It is caused by the bacterium treponema pallidum and is diagnosed through a blood test. Antibodies are detected 3-90 days after contact.

VirusHIV/AIDS

Caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus

It can only be detected after the body develops antibodies.

Diagnosis is made through a special blood test.

.Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginitis is a condition in which vaginal discharge is present and is not caused by just one microbe. Bacterial vaginitis is diagnosed by culture of vaginal fluid and vaginal pH measurement.

Trichomonads

It is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. In women it affects the vagina and in men the urethra. Testing for trichomonas includes culture of vaginal or urethral fluid, urological tests and Pap test.

Why is it important to get tested for STDs?

The preventive and diagnostic testing of STDs is very important for the protection of sexual partners and, by extension, Public health.

I have no symptoms so I don’t have an STD.

This is a misconception that many may have. Unfortunately, many diseases may not show symptoms, so the patient does not know that there is a possibility of infecting sexual partners. Such diseases can be ureaplasma, Hepatitis, AIDS, Warts, etc.

Early diagnosis of an STD, even when a carrier is asymptomatic, will help the person get treated easier and faster compared to when symptoms appear (if it is a curable disease), or help the sexual partner.
